Treadmill Question

Today's post is more of an open discussion. Most of the time when I head to the gym and use the treadmills I see people hold on to the top portion of the treadmill. Not the rails, the part of the treadmill that posts your time, speed, and so on. (see left) 

This seems to happen most when people are on an steep incline. Anyone know if this is safe? To me it seems that it would lessen the calorie burn. But more so it may throw off ones posture, possibly creating issues with the lower back. I am just guessing here. Does anyone know anymore on this?
