Sympathy for the Devil Race Recap 09.14.13

Last weekend I made a very last minute decision to run a Calico Racing event called Sympathy for the Devil. I chose the 5K event just to get outside and be around other runners since I have focused on indoor running lately. I just needed a different experience I guess. I needed something short and close to work in Henderson so this worked perfectly since it started at 7 AM. I packed my bag with a work outfit and also put out my running gear so I wouldn't wake hubby at 5:30 AM.

I headed to the River Mountains Loop Trail @ Equestrian Park Trailhead in Henderson. This event was also a final Farewell to "Running with the Devil" which had to be cancelled this past summer. This event was one of the first done by Calico Racing and Joyce, the Race Director, made sure to acknowledge those that had planned to attend that cancelled event and gave kudos for those that came to say one last goodbye to this race.

The View at the Start Line

At the start of the race Joyce gave us our directions once the 1/2 and full marathoners were on their way. Soon we were off on our own and I felt pretty relaxed. I wasn't going for any PR's or anything like that I just wanted to run solid. Despite the humidity that morning and the steady incline of the first half of the course I did just that. It was when I hit the turn around that I completely messed up. I misinterpreted the volunteer when she said it was the turn around yet pointed to her right. I had thought she meant to keep going to the path that was behind her that headed that direction thinking I just couldn't see where it looped. Once I got around it was still heading up and about .25 miles in I asked a nice guy behind me if I went the wrong way and he said I had so I just turned around then. It  meant that I added a half mile to my race. Oh well, instead of beating myself up I just kept going towards the finish. My official time was 45:42

After the race, I hurried to the gym and grabbed a quick shower before heading to work. Not exactly sure I was smart to do a race before a busy work day but I am still glad I did it. You can never regret doing something that makes you smile and running always seems to do that for me. I may not be great at it, but it is something I can always turn to. There is something to be said about that.

Treadmill Question

Today's post is more of an open discussion. Most of the time when I head to the gym and use the treadmills I see people hold on to the top portion of the treadmill. Not the rails, the part of the treadmill that posts your time, speed, and so on. (see left)

This seems to happen most when people are on an steep incline. Anyone know if this is safe? To me it seems that it would lessen the calorie burn. But more so it may throw off ones posture, possibly creating issues with the lower back. I am just guessing here. Does anyone know anymore on this?

Iron Girl Training - Weeks Five through Seven #irongirl

California - Labor Day Weekend
I first must apologize for a complete lack of posting the last few weeks. Life has been crazy. Some of it was good stuff, and some was sad. Needless to say it has taken a bit of finagling just to get my workouts in without being able to post them.

Week Five (8/18 - 8/24) started out strong but turned into what was a complete bust. Sunday afternoon I completed my Doctor Who Challenge (a virtual event) and completed a 13.1 mile bike ride with a 1.0 mile run afterwards. Unfortunately at some point that week before I had contracted a stomach bug that laid me up for about three days (Sunday night through Wednesday) and the rest of that week I just took it easy so I would be able to recover better for the following week.

Week Six (8/25 - 8/29) began with a brick workout consisting of a 5.3 mile bike ride and a 3.1 mile run. I have to say I was thrilled with that run because it has been a very long time where I have not had to take any kind of walk break on a run, even short ones. I am thinking a lot of that has to do with the fact that I have added much more cardio and also that I am loving the brick workouts. They seem to help out my legs and lungs pre-run. On Monday I followed that up with a short 1.58 mile run on the treadmill. Wednesday I went back to the brick workout and put in a 7.87 mile bike ride and another 1.01 mile run.

Week Seven (8/31-9/7 - modified dates due to travel) was another slow workout week for me but that had a lot to do with the plans we had for Labor Day weekend. We decided to head down to California to spend time with some family there. Saturday though I did get in a killer Strike Fit class courtesy of my cousin-in-law Pam who is a Krav Maga instructor. She was awesome! My favorite part of course was kicking and punching the heavy bag but we also did a short run (probably .10 mile), wall sits, standing planks, abs with various weighted exercise balls, burpees, sit ups, push ups, and more.

We took in a self-guided wine tour after that and drank way to much, a day before the actual wine tour. Not so smart. However, we still managed to have a blast! It was a great way to spend time with family and we had the craziest drive to the wineries courtesy of Jose the limo driver. After that weekend it was catch time up at work, and I did not get in much of a workout other then on Friday the 6th which was a 12.63 mile bike ride. At least I was able to squeeze something else in that week.

The sadness of that Labor Day weekend was learning that a dear friend, Monica, passed away after a long struggle with cancer. Though I know she is no longer in pain, I wish that we had more time with her. Her smile was so welcoming and she always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. She will be missed terribly. I continue to send my love and prayers to her and her family, especially her husband Tom.
